Middle School teachers PJ Stanley and Julie Watts recently participated in the Gilder Lehrman seminar on Slavery and Abolition at Columbia University in July. Directed by Professor Manisha Sinha, lead scholar from the University of Connecticut and pictured above with our teachers, this seminar explored the movement to abolish slavery from the American Revolution to the Civil War. A highlight of the week was visiting the Weeksville Heritage Center in Brooklyn where they toured a historic 19th C. home and learned about how African Americans established the independent community as a place of refuge in the 1830s. Mrs. Stanley and Dr. Watts look forward to incorporating new content and strategies from the seminar into the 8th grade Humanities block this year.
