Students at The Rhoades School in Encinitas recently received multiple awards at the Read-Imagine-Create competition. Students read “Station Eleven” by Emily St. John Mandel and reimagined the book through creative projects, including art, poetry, short stories, dance, film, costume design and more.
Eleven seventh grade students from The Rhoades School were selected as finalists out of more than 800 middle and high school participants in San Diego County. During the awards ceremony, The Rhoades School students received a variety of awards, including third place in the visual art category for fashion sketches by Leia Ryan, second place in the literary art category for a short story by Isabel Lehmann, first place in the media category for a movie trailer by Carter Halenza, and the Artistic Director’s Choice Award for a short story by Leila Elasaad.
The Read-Imagine-Create competition is presented by Write Out Loud San Diego and the National Endowment for the Arts’ Big Read Program. Write Out Loud provides free books, workshops, community events and the Read-Imagine-Create contest to middle and high school students for a chance to win prizes.
