The Rhoades School fall athletic season wrapped up in November and our varsity teams, coaches, and fans had a great time cheering on our Roadrunners in Volleyball and Cross Country.
Volleyball: Fifteen students in grades 5-8 made up our JV and Varsity teams this year. Several of our most effective athletes have been playing for just one year. Two players didn’t start playing until this fall. The amount of growth demonstrated in one season was astounding and a testament to their openness to coaching, sheer determination and positive attitudes.
The Varsity team finished second in the Independent Middle School League and qualified for the playoffs. In the first round, Rhoades defeated the San Diego French American School and in the final round, they played Grauer. The match between the two schools was one for the books, with many exciting rallies and awesome saves. Despite the team’s best efforts, they placed second in the Finals. In early December, we capped off a great year with a friendly game between the students and the faculty and parents.
Coaches this season were Jon Aharoni (who coaches at the Olympic level), Jeff Nolan (Assistant Principal at the LS), and Stacy Pelzel (who played at UCLA and is a current parent to two LS students).
Cross Country: The cross country team this year consisted of 4th, 5th and 8th grade students. The meets were divided into two categories, JV (4th, 5th and 6th graders) and Varsity (7th and 8th graders). Throughout the season, each team member worked hard to improve their times.
Our JV girls placed second as a team at every race and second overall in the league. The boys had a tough field with competition, but did an overall fantastic job holding great times. We look forward to cheering on our boys and girls next season.
Individual placers in meets were as follows:1st meet: Eli 1st, Stella 3rd
2nd meet: Eli 1st, Stella 2nd, and Addison 3rd
3rd meet: Eli 1st, Addison 2nd, and Stella 3rd
4th meet: Eli 1st, Stella 2nd
Finals: Stella 1st, Eli 2nd, and Addison 3rd
Coaches this year were Erica Osborne (Grade 5 teacher) and Nick Dei (MS PE teacher).
Up next are the winter sports – boys and girls basketball. Go Roadrunners!
