Last weekend, seventh grade student, William Sprengelmeyer, competed in the Southern California Regional History Bee and qualified for the National History Bee in Washington DC in June. Congratulations to William!
Being in the History Bee at USC was stressful and fun. I started off in a room with the other competitors, who were mostly in history clubs and had studied for the entire year to be there.
We were placed into individual age groups and sent to a room for the first round of the competition. The room was set-up with a table, chairs, and buzzers. A moderator asked questions and students buzzed in to answer them. Once we were all ready, the moderator asked the first question and within the first few words I knew the answer!
I ended the first round in first place with 10 points. The second round I scored four points, and the third round I scored ten points again! We were called back to the original room to see who would compete in the final round, and I was chosen.
I placed fifth overall and qualified for the National History Bee in Washington D.C. and the International History Bee in Rome.
Here is an example of a question I answered:
This man once served as a Representative from Tennessee and later became the only person in American history to govern two U.S. states. This man served as the first president of the republic of Texas. For the point, identify this man who lends his name to the largest city in Texas.
We are proud of you!! Good luck at the finals in Washington DC!
